Tuesday, July 29, 2014 is a day I will never forget in my life, when in a public transport from Makeni to Freetown news break out about the death of Dr. Sheik Humarr Khan. We were engrossed in casual conversation, as the bombshell news of the death of the only virologist credited for treating more than 100 Ebola victims in Sierra Leone hit me. For me it was a moment of disbelief as I patiently listen to the numerous reactions of colleague passengers in the bus. I was shocked, asking myself why these people would want to confirm the death of my brother and friend. I managed to listen to the various analyses on the circumstances surrounding his death, with several voices offering prayers of: “Leh God gee am good road”, mixed with fear and apprehension of a bleak situation marking another sad chapter in the history of Sierra Leone. Then shortly after, came the confirmation by the numerous calls from family members, friends and the many commentators that hailed the medic for his selfless devotion. Continue reading
